SARAJEVO, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- A Ryanair plane landed at Banja Luka International Airport on Tuesday, marking the first direct flight between the city of Banja Luka in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Swedish capital Stockholm, local media reported Tuesday.

At a ceremony held at the airport located some 235 kilometers northwest of the capital Sarajevo, Zeljka Cvijanovic, President of Republika Srpska, one of the entities in BiH, pointed out that the development of Banja Luka International Airport "brought enormous opportunities for improving and strengthening the local economy, tourism and passenger traffic".

Airport's director Dusko Kovacevic highlighted that from now, citizens can travel to European cities cheaply. He emphasized that he expects more than 100,000 passengers in 2019.

The flight between Banja Luka International Airport and Stockholm Skavsta Airport will take place two times a week, on Tuesday and Saturday.

Ryanair stated in April this year that it would operate its first flights from Banja Luka International Airport to cities of Brussels and Memmingen, Germany as of November.
