AMMAN, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Over 192,000 Syrian refugees registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have voluntarily returned to their home country from Jordan since the collapse of the previous Syrian government, a Jordanian official has said.

Minister of Government Communications Mohammad Al Momani, also the government spokesperson, wrote on X Tuesday that Jordan remains committed to its humanitarian role regarding Syrian refugees.

He said the country's policy of voluntary return adheres strictly to international law, even as Jordan faces mounting challenges itself.

Al Momani said he met with Maria Stavropoulou, the UNHCR representative to Jordan, the same day, during which he reaffirmed the vital importance of the existing partnership between Amman and the UN agency.

Jordan continues to serve as a regional model for fulfilling humanitarian obligations toward refugees, he added.

UNHCR data from early 2022 shows the Jordan hosted nearly 673,000 refugees, almost exclusively Syrian. ■
